NRBC Open Classic
Andrea Fappani and Steve Simon’s Custom Legend became the 2007 National Reining Breeders Classic Open Champions on April 21. But unlike the nine champions that preceded it, this title came only after an exciting runoff in front of a large crowd at the Great Southwest Equestrian Center in Katy, Texas.
Cody Sapergia rode in on Lance Griffin’s Whizter Chic (Peppy Chic Olena X Chantilly Whiz) and after a scalding run, the Canadian entry rode out with a score of 227!
Then Andrea Fappani rode in on Draw 10, Custom Legend (Custom Crome X Dry Doc Bobbie), owned by Steve Simon. Custom Legend loves the Great Southwest Equestrian Center Arena. He’d won $106,631 of his lifetime earnings of $142,962 at the NRBC, so the audience expected a sizzling run – and they got one! The ground-moving stops – and the picture-perfect circles resulted in a score of 232!
As rider after rider challenged the top score, the lead held. Brian Bell took control of the pen on Jimmy Pierce’s Starbucks Jazz (Smart Starbuck X Flipped Out Jazz), but had to settle for a score of 228. Then, just two horses later, the excitement escalated again when Shawn Flarida piloted Walla Walla Whiz (Topsail Whiz X Shiney Walla Wanda) to a scalding run worth 229.5 points for owner Arcese Quarter Horses USA. Close, but not close enough!
When Ruben Vandorp entered the arena on the 2006 NRBC Champion, Einsteins Revolution (Einstein X Fly Flashy Jac), the stallion he owns as part of the partnership of Wagner and Vandorp, the enthusiastic audience was with him. The judges marked their scorecards and when the total, 232, was announced, there was a tie for the lead!
The twin scores held through the next seven riders, until finally there was only one left to go, Jordan Larson on Victoria Lambert’s Memorable Affair (Major Vaquero X Coronas Affair). With the noisy crowd whooping and whistling, Jordan gave his best shot, but even an impressive 227 couldn’t budge the leaders. It did, however, end up 5th in the Open, good for $31,000. And more, the great ride on Lambert’s mare earned top honors on the NRBC’s new Mare Bonus, worth over $10,000 more! What a memorable moment for Victoria Lambert as she was honored to receive the first ever NRBC Leading Open Mare award.
Vandorp and Fappani agreed to a runoff, and with a quick drag, the stage was set. Custom Legend entered the arena first, The Great Southwest Coliseum Arena is huge, and getting through one pattern taxes most horses. Many wondered out loud if the two horses would have enough air left for a second run. Custom Legend immediately quieted the naysayers. From the first explosive stop, to the lightning turnarounds, Fappani negotiated a run that defined textbook perfection, and his score of 236.5 rocked the facility. Vandorp followed and had an outstanding run, but while he didn’t best Andrea’s score, Vandorp was still elated. Not only had he won the NRBC Open Reserve Championship, worth $60,000, he’d also garnered the Intermediate Open title, good for another $27,711!

NRBC Announces Mare Bonus Will Continue
Hot on the heels of the most successful-ever National Reining Breeders Classic, the NRBC has announced that its NRBC Mare Bonus will become a permanent part of the show.
The NRBC Mare Bonus was initiated at the 2007 NRBC and was such a popular addition that the NRBC Board, in a meeting on May 13, voted to continue rewarding the highest advancing/placing mares. In 2007, participation in the program was optional, but enough stallion owners participated to allow the Mare Bonus to pay $34,250, including $10,000 in added money from the NRBC.
Victoria Lambert’s Memorable Affair ( Major Vaquero X Coronas Affair) was the top finishing mare in the Open division and she earned a mare bonus of $9,590, in addition to her other earnings.

Robbie Boyce Tops Snaffle Bit Futurity Intermediate Open Finals
The first round Open Finals of the Snaffle Bit Futurity concluded late Friday evening as Robbie Boyce, of Jackson, Texas, and Rob Leach, of Hanford, California, took home the Intermediate and Limited Open Championships, respectively.
...
Boyce piloted Playin Shineylynx, by Playin Stylish and out of Lynx Lil Shiner, to a composite score of 648. The Intermediate Open win garnered Boyce $20,520, a Bob’s Custom Saddle, and a Skyline Gold & Silversmith buckle, both sponsored by San Juan Ranch, a Sensorflex pad from Classic Equine, a monogrammed down vest from Bloomer Trailers, a custom hat from Shorty’s Caboy Hattery, and Platinum Performance.
Playin Shineylynx is owned by Lyle Lovett, who unfortunately missed the finals because of professional obligations. According to Boyce, the win was bittersweet. “This horse is from the first foal crop that Lyle bred and raised,” he explained. “It was a real accomplishment to win, but I’m sorry Lyle missed it. Luckily, he’ll be back for the finals on Sunday.”
Boyce also competed in the Intermediate Open Finals on JRS Highbrow Jerry, by Smart Little Jerry and out of HH Highbrow Sugar, for Carl Lambert. After the second event this duo were leading the finals composite, having marked a 218 in the herd work and a 215.5 in the reining. But a bad cow on the fence that actually knocked down JRS Highbrow Jerry caused a low score in the fence work. Miraculously, and much to the crowds amazement, JRS Highbrow Jerry regained his feet and went after the cow with a vengeance. Check out our video page to see more about this dynamic stallion. The pair finished third, earning $12,420.

Victoria Lambert and Guaranteed By Amos took the top honors at the 4R Performance Non Pro and Intermediate Non Pro Futurity. Guaranteed By Amos is a new mount for Victoria and she was a little nervous about showing her. This was the first Non Pro futurity for Victoria Lambert to win and also the first time she won a lawson bronze. When asked how she felt about the win Lambert stated, "I was so excited about how well my mare did that I never thought about winning, after all there were a lot of top riders in the class. And then when I found out I had won two Lawson's and two trophy buckles it was really like the icing on the cake. I can not say enough about my mare though, she was prepared just right by Jared Leclair and she performed great."

That really fits this mare as she has been shown by Dell Hendricks, Jordan Larson and now Brent Wright. She is just a great show mare and loves the show ring. We have two babies by her so far and we are really looking forward to seeing them in the show ring."

WinStar Casino Non Pro Futurity
Victoria Lambert of Hempstead, Texas, rode Guaranteed By Amos, to the Intermediate Non Pro Championship. The pair won a check for $1,536 for their score of 214.5 in the Intermediate. Although Lambert has been involved in reining competition and has shown futurity horses in the past, this is her first year to win a futurity. And so far this year she has been very successful. She bought her horse from Pat Rogers during the Tulsa Classic Futurity. “I’m really grateful that Pat gave me the opportunity to purchase this horse,” she said. Lambert and Guaranteed By Amos competed at their first Futurity – the 4R Futurity, held in Katy, Texas – and won both the Non Pro and Intermediate Non Pro. “I was so excited,” Lambert said after her win. “This horse has been so great, and I can’t wait to show her some more. We’ll be showing at the NRHA Futurity next month.” Lambert and Guaranteed By Amos placed third in the Non Pro division and also won the Houston Ranch Non Pro Mare Bonus. NRHA Non Pro Futurity
Guaranteed By Amos carried Victoria Lambert to her first ever finals at the NRHA Futurity. Marking a 214 in the first go Victoria opted to show the mare in the Non Pro consolation class to try to make Non Pro Finals. "I knew that I had made the Intermediate Non Pro Finals, but my trainer, Jared Leclair, thought I should just try to fix my mistakes from the first go and if I made Non Pro finals then that would be a bonus." Victoria had a big under turn that cost her one point per judge in the first go so she was really looking to fix that mistake. Marking a 215.5 in the consolation class gave Guaranteed By Amos and Lambert a place in both the Intermediate Finals and the Non Pro Finals. They ended up
13th in the Intermediate Finals and 23rd in the Non pro Finals.
