A capacity crowd in the large amphitheater of Port City Stockyards’ Sealy Livestock Auction paid “spring high” prices for consignments to the 23rd Annual ABBA National F1 and TBA sponsored Purebred Brahman Female Sale on Saturday, April 17th.

On a beautiful spring day, over 160 interested cowmen registered to buy the 23rd Annual offering as 48 of the group stepped to the plate to place their money where their knowledge is. They looked at females consigned by Brahman and F1 Breeders from Texas, Arizona, and Louisiana. The overall F1 sale averaged $1041.50 with the sale offering consisting of 80.5% open females. The Brahman females consisted of 78% open females and averaged $1517.00
This year’s 23rd Annual Sale was dedicated to the loving memory of Max Watts, formerly of Frost Texas.

Max was a dedicated Brahman breeder that recognized the inherent value of the breed through its ability to maximize hybrid vigor in the bovine world. Max and his soul mate Shirley, reared their three children in the Brahman world, in the country traditions of hard work and giving instead of receiving. His family has spawned and left a legacy to be long remembered among Brahman breeders and F1 producers.

Champion F1 females were named in only one judging divisions as Arnold Saunders of Devine and John Coleman Locke of Hungerford judged some seventeen pens of eligible open F1 females. The champion pen of open females was consigned by Melvin Bonn’s Bonn Ranch of Fredericksburg, TX; this pen of fancy Golden Certified F1 Brahman X Hereford heifers sold for $1000.00 to Chuck Brown of Schulenburg. The F1 Certification Program of the American Brahman Breeders Association is the seed stock industry’s leading program of recognition of superior maternal genetics that results from crossing the American Brahman on purebred genetics of English or Continental breeds. The program recognizes the cross of registered parents as a Golden Certified cross while the Certified Female is a cross of a registered bull on qualified cows that have been inspected by the ABBA for use in this upscale program. Commercial females that are produced under ABBA’s F1 Program Guidelines is the commercial cowman’s assurance of the purity of the crosses that make up the “Queen of Cow County” and provides for the maximum amount of hybrid vigor available in the bovine world.

Co Sale Chairman J. D. Sartwelle, Jr. of Sealy states that there is a three-fold purpose for this highly publicized sale. This is ABBA’s opportunity to focus on one of the American Brahman’s role in the beef cattle industry by spot lighting the primary ingredient of any cowman’s first and very real need for superior maternal ability and environmental adaptability in his cowherd. The second purpose is to provide a showcase for those who raise the very best of these Brahman F1 genetics and thirdly to make them available through public auction to those who admire them most and are interested in making a profit in the cow/calf sector of our industry.

The sale was chaired by Lex Forgason of Hungerford, TBA President; Chris Shivers of Houston, TX, ABBA Executive Vice President; and J.D. Sartwelle, Jr. of Sealy, TX, ABBA Director and Chairman of the ABBA Marketing Committee that shepherds the F1 Program.
