Satterfield Ranch is located in the beautiful hills and piney woods of East Texas. Ranching runs deep in Nancy Satterfield’s family. Her Great-grandfather, Joe Hurt was a rancher years before her birth, with her father following in his footsteps until he gave up ranching when she was 11.
When Scott and Nancy married in 1987, they would spend their visits enjoying the landscape of East Texas. This love for the land and what it had to offer, was the beginning of Satterfield Ranch. They purchased “headquarters” in 1992 and acquired their first Commercial Brahman the following year.
For Scott it was love at first sight, while it rekindled a familiar life of simpler times for Nancy. With the help of Nancy’s sister Laura and brother-in-law, Robert Johnston, the ranch operation began.
In 1995, Nancy gave Scott his first two Guy Jeanes Registered Brahman mamas, at which time they joined the American Brahman Breeders Association. This opened them up to a wealth of experienced friendships and education putting themon the road to creating an impressive herd of Registered Brahman cattle.
In 2004 Scott and Nancy moved one step closer to their dream of retiring on the ranch by moving from their home of 19 years in Illinois. Scott began a Gastroenterology practice in Tyler, Texas - located a mere hour from the ranch. With the full time responsibilities of his practice and raising Jake, 13 and Emily, 5, they still find their time at the ranch cut short by these important responsibilities.
Fortunately, they can depend on Robert to work hard as he manages the day to day operation of Satterfield Ranch. With close attention to pedigree and fertility selection, they have an impressive herd. Breeding decisions are based on science; selecting for marbling and tenderness based on the more recently available Genestar information.
They participate in carcass evaluation making changes in the herd based on these results. More recently, they are experiencing success with Sexed Semen. With such attention to detail in their breeding program their success shows, as the ranch is “busting at the seams” with over 500 head of cattle spread over about a thousand acres.
When asked about their favorite animal, they would have to choose Mr.V8 328/5. As a leader in their herd for a few years, they are pleased with not only his impressive sexed semen collection rate and quality, but also his very impressive Genestar rating.
The Satterfield’s always enjoy meeting with other breeders. As their children grow, they look forward to going on more ranch visits, both foreign and domestic.
