2009 Miami International Agricultural & Cattle Show
On March 20 to March 22 at the Ronald Reagan Equestrian Center at Tropical Park in Miami, Florida, the second annual Miami International Agricultural & Cattle Show was held with more than 45,000 people attending. The show featured 397 head of cattle from 12 states, Florida, Georgia, Texas, Arkansas, Arizona, Missouri, Tennessee, Washington, North Carolina, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Alabama, and Mississippi. The cattle exhibited were from many different breeds including Brahmans, Brangus, Angus, Santa Gertrudis, Red Brangus, Shorthorn, Hereford, Mini-Hereford, Simmental, Red Angus, and Maine-Anjou-all of which were displayed and competed for all to see. Many potential buyers from some 22 countries, many from South America, and all came out to look and explore the opportunities to purchase cattle form the United States.
The three-day event, along with the cattle show, offered equestrian shows, live music, and food from all cultures. They also offered educational seminars and workshops for both cattle and horticultural industries where a wide range of topics were discussed, including herd health, cattle diseases, breeding soundness exams, and import/export processes. The presenters were from the University of Florida, College of Veterinary Medicine, the Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (IFAS), and professionals from the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA).
The Brahman show was high-lighted as the premier show, starting at 7 pm on Saturday night, with a standing room only crowd, which roared with excitement when every winner was chosen.
The overall Grand Champion Female went to the Intermediate Champion BB LP Wham 913, owned by La Preciosa, while the Reserve Champion Female went to MDS Doc Jr’s Lady 295, owned by Briana Bishop.
The overall Grand Champion Bull went to Mr. Zero 858, owned by Zero Ranch, while NMSU Garret Manso 7057, owned by Heart Bar Ranch, and was named Reserve Champion Bull.
Special guest present included Executive Vice President Chris Shivers, Show Committee Chairman Will Detering, and American Junior Brahman Association Queen Amanda Pounds who was accompanied by her grandfather, Robert Barlow.
In addition to the breed’s shows, there were four American Junior Brahman Association members, Adrian Land, Briana Bishop, Brandalyn Bishop, and Bethalan Bishop, which exhibited their Brahman cattle in the show. With much pride, all four of these juniors were chosen out of the youth exhibitors to compete in an All-Breeds Showmanship contest on Sunday. In the Senior Division, Briana placed third and Adrian placed fourth, in the Intermediate Division, Brandalyn placed first and won a crystal cup for her efforts, and in the Junior Division Bethalan placed third. It was a very good representation of the AJBA for 4 out of the fourteen youth that were chosen, were Brahman exhibitors.
