ANOTHER CINCH NRHA NON PRO TITLE FOR MCCUTCHEON
Oklahoma City, OK – December 5, 2008 – The 2008 Cinch® NRHA Non Pro Futurity Finals were the featured competition on Friday at the NRHA Futurity & Adequan® North American Affiliate Championship (NAAC) Show in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Nearly two dozen countries have been competing at the show over the past nine days with eight riders from five countries advancing to the Cinch Non Pro Futurity Finals. This year’s finals saw more first-time Non Pro Finalists making it the ride of a lifetime for many.
NRHA’s first Non Pro and woman Million Dollar Rider Mandy McCutcheon racked up another NRHA Non Pro Futurity Championship on James McCutcheon’s Smart Scat taking home $43,802 dollars in prize money as well as other prizes. This is her fifth Non Pro Futurity Championship. McCutcheon qualified two other horses for the finals, Dont Miss This Gun and Showtime Gotta Gun.

McCutcheon Plays it Smart
For the second year in a row, NRHA Million Dollar Rider Mandy McCutcheon earned the non pro division championship at the Southwest Reining Horse Association Futurity. This year, her partner was Smart Scat (Smart Starbuck x Scats Frecklefoot), owned by her brother-in-law, Jim McCutcheon.
“I had another mare that I showed at the Futurity in Tulsa, but she got hurt,” explained McCutcheon. “I was short a horse, so I called Jim. I had seen this mare, and liked her and he just told me to do whatever I wanted. He went on a trip to Sweden, and I went and got her.”
The pair obviously hit it off, as they also topped the preliminary round with a score of 224, even though McCutcheon admitted she wasn’t 100% sure how they would do. When they entered the arena in the finals, the Aubrey, Texas competitor was confident the score would be good.
“She felt really good, and after the first lead change I really knew she had hooked in. When we went from the large fast to the small slow, I kind of came forward in the saddle. I laughed, because I knew she was really paying attention,” McCutcheon noted.
The championship came with a check for $6,234, a Lawson bronze, and one of the special EZ Go Golf Carts that the SWRHA Futurity has become known for.
But the winning for the McCutcheon family didn’t end there. The substantial added money that the SWRHA has comes from the generous support of the Online Stallion Silent Auction, and the owners who donate breedings to their stallions. Because Mandy and her husband Tom had donated a breeding to their stallion, Smart Starbuck, who sired the mare, they were also awarded another EZ Go Golf Cart as a show of appreciation.
If events play out as in the previous year, the next month and a half will be very lucrative for the pair. Billed as “Where the Finest Go First,” the SWRHA has lived up to its motto, and that was never more true than last year when McCutcheon earned the non pro title on Haidachino Hollywood just a month before winning the National Reining Horse Association Futurity in Oklahoma City.
“I hope I still have her. I think I’m just going to go ahead and run her back home before Jim takes her away from me,” laughed McCutcheon.
